Raising awareness of gender equality in police structures in BiH through the education of senior management

The project entitled "Raising awareness of gender equality in police structures in BiH through the education of senior management" was implemented in 2020 with the financial support of the Agency for Gender Equality of BiH from the FIGAP II Program.

The aim of the project is to raise awareness of gender equality in police structures in BiH through the implementation of education for middle and senior management, ie decision makers in the police. Within the project, three educational workshops were organized in which about 100 police officers took part.

Through the conducted research, direct contacts in police agencies and a series of meetings, it was found that executives, who are mostly men, did not receive appropriate training on gender equality and discrimination in the workplace. Gender issues have been treated as "women's issues" over the years and education of this type is most often referred to women, very often the same people.

The aim of the project is to influence 100 people, decision-makers at different levels of decision-making in the police, so that through their further work they are committed to gender mainstreaming in all spheres of police work (police admission, promotion, participation in working groups and commissions, education, budget planning, etc.), and to improve the position of women in the police, with a focus on reducing gender discrimination and sexual harassment.

Since education is the best way to overcome gender stereotypes and prejudices, we appreciate that it is extremely important that top managers in police structures attend training on this topic, in order to begin to take concrete measures to integrate a gender perspective in all areas of policing, and the application of certain affirmative measures that will contribute to gender equality and ultimately greater efficiency of police bodies, ie increase the level of human security.

The Program for Implementation of the Gender Action Plan of BiH (FIGAP II program 2017-2020) is the result of cooperation between the Agency for Gender Equality of BiH - Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH, Gender Center of the Federation of BiH and Gender Center of Republika Srpska, and its goal is to ensure sustainable implementation of the Gender Action Plan of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The program is supported by the Kingdom of Sweden, represented by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Sweden in Bosnia and Herzegovina, through the development agency SIDA.
