EUROPEAN UNION SUPPORT
50 NEW TRAINERS IN THE FIELD OF GENDER EQUALITY EDUCATED
Within the project "Police and Respect for Human Rights in BiH", supported by the European Union, a two-day training for trainers in the field of gender equality in police structures in BiH was held in Mostar (4-5, February) with the participation of police officials from all over the country. This is the second training of this type, after which police structures in BiH will received 50 trainers in the field of gender equality.
As part of the training, the current situation in the police structures in BiH regarding gender equality was presented. The gender concept was elaborated in detail, as well as stereotypes and prejudices, gender discrimination and sexual harassment. The focus was on domestic and international legal frameworks and existing mechanisms for achieving gender equality in BiH, as well as mechanisms for protection against discrimination. Having in mind the fact that education is the best way to overcome gender stereotypes and prejudices that hinder the integration of gender issues in all spheres of police work, as well as the progress of women in the police, it is very important that police structures get their own capacities to conduct continuous education on this topic. Within the same project, a Handbook for trainers will be developed, which will further facilitate this process.
The project "Police and Respect for Human Rights in BiH", within which this training was organized, is supported by the European Union. It aims to strengthen respect for human rights within police agencies and in the exercise of police powers, as well as to promote gender equality in police agencies. It is jointly conducted by the Center for Security Studies from Sarajevo, the "Policewomen's Network" Association from Sarajevo, and the Geneva Center for Security Sector Management (DCAF). The project started implementation in January last year, while the planned implementation period is 20 month.
